Sealdah Division of Eastern Railway, in alignment with Indian Railways’ commitment to excellence and safety in train operations, has undertaken several Initiatives aimed at strengthening the welfare, training, and operational support of Loco Pilots, who are entrusted with one of the most critical responsibilities in railway functioning.
Loco Pilots serve as the first line of safety in train operations, and their performance directly impacts the reliability, punctuality, and safety of rail services. Recognizing their pivotal role, Sealdah Division continues to prioritize infrastructure upgrades, technological advancements, and welfare measures.
At present, Sealdah Division has 1352 Loco Pilots, including 48 women & 351 Assistant Loco Pilots, which will increase the total strength, bolstering manpower and ensuring improved operational coverage.
Running Rooms Comfort and Care:
To provide adequate rest, Sealdah Division operates fifteen running rooms at the following locations:
Sealdah, Kolkata, Namkhana, Lakshikantapur, Canning, Diamond, Dum Dum, Bangaon, Hasnabad, Krishnapur, Krishnanagar, Ranaghat, Shantipur, Gede, Naihati. All running rooms have now been upgraded to fully air-conditioned facilities to combat extreme summer conditions. Amenities include: Subsidized nutritious meals, water coolers with RO purification, Meditation and relaxation zones and Recreational facilities, clean and hygienic toilets.
Technological Advancements for Safer Operations:
The division is investing significantly in modernizing its fleet with advanced safety features such as: Air-conditioning in three phase locomotives, Fog Signal Devices (FSD) for better visibility in adverse weather, Signal Location Booklets distributed to every loco pilot and Emergency brake application drills conducted regularly at crew lobbies. All the crew booking lobby has been provided with CMS with BA, Bio & camera integrated. All are under CCTV surveillance, AC facility, separate counselling room & crew waiting room, availability of purified water & ISO certified.
Continuous Learning and Training:
To keep pace with evolving railway operations, all loco pilots undergo refresher training every three years, ensuring they remain well-versed in updated safety norms and operational protocols. Various safety drives and special counselling programmes are regularly organized for checking the alertness and safety awareness among the Loco pilot. Special safety seminars and meetings are also organized for interaction with family members of Loco pilot for educating on the role of quality rest in the life of Loco pilot. Special safety awards are given regularly to the loco pilots to boost their morale and confidence.
Residential and Medical Facilities:
Sealdah Division provides railway quarters for loco pilots, promoting a healthy work-life balance and proximity to best services.
Furthermore comprehensive medical care is offered to loco pilots and their families through railway hospitals and health units, including: Routine check-ups, Emergency services, Specialist consultations and Hospitalization and post care services.
In this context DRM Sealdah Sri Rajeev Saxena, stated that Sealdah Division remains steadfast in its commitment to empower, protect, and support its loco pilots in every possible way. By combining advanced infrastructure, modern technology, human-centric welfare policies, and a culture of safety, the division aims to ensure safe and efficient railway operations.
